catching up: flowers, streetwear and a fashion flashback

Wow, it has been a minute since I updated this little corner of the internet! Time flies when you're having fun, right?

This spring, I styled some spectacularly fun projects for Hour Detroit, starting with a dreamy, romantic floral fantasia for our spring fashion shoot and most recently a totally rad fashion flashback to the 1980s for our prom-themed Best of Detroit issue. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have already seen most of these shots, but here are some highlights from three of my recent Hour projects:

For the April issue, Hour art director Valerie Morgan wanted to do something light and romantic, with a focus on tighter beauty shots. She also wanted to include floral elements, so I suggested partnering with florist Susan McLeary of Passionflower. She creates gorgeous wearable flower arrangements, from crowns to living jewelry. She designed some incredible pieces for this shoot and was dream to work with on set. The floral elements were the perfect complement to the whites, pastels, floral prints, and delicate jewelry I pulled for the shoot. Overall it was so dreamy and romantic, a breath of fresh air to welcome spring after a long, dreary winter.

For our men's fashion story in the May issue, we pivoted to something completely different than our floral women's shoot: streetwear! Shot in Eastern Market, for this shoot I pulled looks from some of the metro Detroit area's top streetwear boutiques, including Revive and Burn Rubber, and some made in Detroit brands, like Detroit vs. Everybody and The Dirt Label. The moment I knew I'd done my job right on this shoot was when our super stylish model told me he would wear all of the looks I put together. It was the ultimate compliment.

Last but certainly not least, for the June Best of Detroit issue, we went back in time and created a 1980s prom, starring real high school and college students, as well as several winners. The Best Of shoot is always a huge production with a huge cast, and this year my intrepid assistant, Jennifer, and I dressed about 30 people in fabulous vintage fashion. Thank you to all the local vintage stores who let me raid their supplies of '80s prom dresses, and to all the moms who sent their kids to the shoot with gems pulled from the back of their closets. Also, a big shout out to prop stylist Stephanie Potts, who created the prom of John Hughes' dreams.
